SCOTTISH LABOUR LEADER KEZIA DUGDALE ANNOUNCES NEW SHADOW FRONT BENCH TEAM

After securing leadership last weekend by a 72% majority, the new Labour leader Kezia Dugdale, alongside her deputy leader Alex Rowley (MSP for Cowdenbeath), has announced the new Scottish Labour frontbench.

These appointments include remits in the roles of health, education and finance. Some job titles have been rebranded. For example, Jenny Marra, who was previously Head of Health, Wellbeing and Sport, is now spokesperson for Equality. This new rebranding initiative reflects the Labour values of equality, opportunity and public services.

The team is gender-balanced with five women joining her along with five men.

This includes Jackie Baillie, who will continue to speak for the party on Finance, having been appointed as Public Services and Wealth Creation spokeswoman. Sarah Boyack will also continue with her duties as the Environmental Justice spokeswoman.

Greame Pearson who supported Ken Macintosh in the bid for leadership, was not prevented from returning to his role as justice spokesperson, replacing Hugh Henrys. According to Glenn Campbell, BBC Scotland political correspondent Kezia Dugdale said she “doesn’t bear grudges”.

Kezia Dugdale said: “I am excited about the future. We all know the big task that faces Scottish Labour in the months and years ahead, but we’re up for it.

“My new team has a good mix of experience and vision to start the task of renewing Scottish Labour.

“The most important goal of any party must be to ensure that the life chances of our young people are determined by their potential, work rate and ambition, not by their background. These values will drive my team in every portfolio.

“Everybody in Scottish politics needs to get up to speed with the changed mood of the nation. The public will no longer accept politicians from any party complaining about what we can’t do.

“We all need to offer a positive vision of what we will do with the powers we do have.”

Interestingly there are no roles for the four MSPs Neil Findlay, Cara Hilton, Elaine Smith or Elaine Murray who are in support of Jeremy Corbyn in the UK party leadership race.
