Scottish First Minister's Questions, 03/11/2016

This week in FMQs the party leaders clashed on the proposed reform of council tax that will be voted on later today. The proposed reforms would see an increase in the top four bands of council tax in Scotland.

The policy proposal to change the banding of the current council tax system has been condemned by both the Conservatives and Labour. Tory leader Ruth Davidson criticised the plans, stating that they will damage Scotland’s reputation as a business hub. While Labour leader Kezia Dugdale said that a Labour Government would scrap the ‘unfair’ council tax and was critical of the SNP Government for failing to use its tax powers to close the gap between the richest and poorest.

First Minister Nicola Sturgeon stated that the proposed change will instantly free up £100M to help raise attainment in schools. She said she was confident that the proposals were reasonable, fair and balanced.
